Index My Site

How to submit a URL to Bing

Bing accepts URLs through Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow, its URL Submission API, and sitemaps. This page shows how each one works. If you also submit pages to Google, Index My Site can send the same URLs to both in one job.

Four ways to submit URLs to Bing

All four are free and run by Bing. Which one fits depends on how many pages you publish and whether you want it automated.

  1. Submit URLs in Bing Webmaster Tools

    Paste URLs one per line on the Submit URLs page for a site you have verified. Bing allows up to 10,000 URLs per domain per day, and the quota resets at midnight UTC.

    Best for: A handful of pages, by hand.

  2. Send URLs with IndexNow

    Host a key file on your site, then send changed URLs in an HTTP request. One request can carry up to 10,000 URLs. Bing recommends IndexNow over its other submission methods.

    Best for: Automatic submission when you publish, update, or delete pages.

  3. Call the Bing URL Submission API

    An API in Bing Webmaster Tools for verified sites, with up to 500 URLs per batch and the same 10,000 URLs per domain per day. Bing says it may be deprecated in favour of IndexNow.

    Best for: Custom systems that already use the Bing Webmaster API.

  4. Submit a sitemap

    Submit your sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools or add a Sitemap line to robots.txt. Bing fetches it on submission and then rereads it regularly, typically at least once a day.

    Best for: Making sure Bing knows about every page on your site.

How to submit a URL in Bing Webmaster Tools

This is the manual route. It needs a verified site and suits a few pages at a time. Bing notes it does not support bulk upload or automation.

  1. Sign in to Bing Webmaster Tools.
  2. Add your site and verify that you own it, if you have not already.
  3. Select your verified site and open Submit URLs.
  4. Enter one URL per line.
  5. Choose Submit.

How to submit URLs to Bing in bulk with IndexNow

IndexNow is the route Bing recommends for automatic submission. You prove you own the site with a key file, then send changed URLs as they are published.

  1. Create a key of 8 to 128 characters: letters, numbers, and dashes.
  2. Host it as a UTF-8 text file named after the key, ideally at the root of your site.
  3. Send up to 10,000 URLs per request whenever pages are added, updated, or deleted.
  4. A 200 or 202 response means the URLs were received, not that they are indexed.

From the IndexNow documentation.

curl -X POST https://api.indexnow.org/IndexNow \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8" \
  -d '{
    "host": "www.example.com",
    "key": "abc123",
    "keyLocation": "https://www.example.com/abc123.txt",
    "urlList": [
      "https://www.example.com/blog/new-post",
      "https://www.example.com/docs/new-feature"
    ]
  }'

Bing's own routes vs the Index My Site Bing add-on

Bing's routes are free and only reach Bing. The add-on sends the same URLs to Google and Bing in one job, without setting anything up in Bing Webmaster Tools.

Work out what it costs to send URLs to Google and Bing

Enter how many URLs you publish, choose the add-ons, and copy the request for the API or the CLI. In the web app, tick Bing when you create the job.

Add-ons

× = in

at $0.20 per credit, or at $0.10 per credit on purchases of $1,000 or more.

of these are Bing credits. They are not returned, unless Bing is unavailable when your URLs are sent.

Each URL confirmed as not indexed in Google gets its standard credit back.

Replace the example URLs with your own.

What the Bing add-on does and does not do

The add-on sends your URLs to Bing. Checking and reporting stay on Google.

  • Sends every URL in the job to Bing

    It applies to every URL in the job, including URLs you approve or check again later.

  • Needs no Bing Webmaster Tools setup

    No Bing account, key file, or site verification on your side. Any public URL can be submitted.

  • Does not check or report Bing results

    Job pages and reports show Google results only. Use Bing Webmaster Tools if you want to see Bing index status.

  • Does not return the Bing credit

    The one exception: if Bing is unavailable when your URLs are sent, the Bing credit goes straight back to your balance and Google indexing carries on.

Frequently asked questions

Sign in to Bing Webmaster Tools, select a site you have verified, open Submit URLs, enter one URL per line, and choose Submit. To submit pages automatically as you publish them, Bing recommends IndexNow. To tell Bing about every page on your site, submit a sitemap in Bing Webmaster Tools or reference it in robots.txt.

Bing says manual submission in Bing Webmaster Tools and the URL Submission API allow up to 10,000 URLs per domain per day, resetting at midnight UTC, and the API accepts up to 500 URLs per batch. Your own quota can be lower, and you can ask Bing Webmaster Tools support for more. IndexNow accepts up to 10,000 URLs in one request.

No. Bing says it may choose not to index URLs that do not meet its selection criteria, and that submitting the same URL again does not speed up indexing. Pages need to be crawlable, useful, and in line with the Bing Webmaster Guidelines.

Bing says its Webmaster Guidelines cover how content is discovered, indexed, and surfaced across Bing search, Copilot, and grounding API results. A page Bing has not found cannot show up in any of them.

It sends each URL in your job to Bing as well as to Google. Turn it on in the web app, with "bing": true in the API, with --bing in the CLI, or ask your agent over MCP. There is nothing to set up in Bing Webmaster Tools and no site to verify. We check every URL once after 24 hours. Your full report follows around day 5, with final checks around day 14. Those checks and reports cover Google only: we do not check or report Bing results.

Bing adds 1 credit per URL, so a URL with Bing uses 2 credits, and 3 with Fast as well. Credits cost $0.20 each, or $0.10 on purchases of $1,000 or more. The Bing credit is not returned, except that if Bing is unavailable when your URLs are sent, it goes straight back to your balance. If Google has not indexed a URL after the final check, the standard credit comes back.

Use Bing Webmaster Tools. URL Inspection shows the index status of a URL on a verified site, and the IndexNow tab shows crawl and index status for URLs submitted with IndexNow. The Index My Site Bing add-on does not report Bing results.
